I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where those of us who are totally bumbed about Dumbledore's death can speak out - post our favorite memories of Dumbledore - favorite quotes - whatever will make your heart a bit lighter :(

Let it all out - you'll feel better!

I suppose I might as well start - :(

Dumbledore really was a great character. He is perhaps one of the most complex characters in the series, next to Voldemort of course, and certainly fueled an immense amount of discussions on this site for many months..

I've always liked Dumbledore, because he saw the best in people (even people who probably didn't deserve it) and gave them second chances, not to mention he always tried to be fair. In addition, he was always there for Harry when he needed advice and could go to no one else..

Favorite quotes or scenes involving Dumbledore..
I really love how emotional he is about Cedric at the end of GoF. The quote in my signature, well, it just reminds me of what a good man he was (or 'seemed to be' for those of you DiE stinkers  ) and that he did have a really soft side, but at the same time incorporates advice into it..

At the same time, I'm definitely going to miss the quirky old man with the funny sense of humor. Who else would love lemon drops and have all the passwords up to his office be various sweets?

I suppose I'll end this with two of my favorite Dumbledore quotes:
"...I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I had never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamberpots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished. But I must keep an eye out for it. Possibly it is only accessible at five thirty in the morning. Or it may only appear at the quarter moon - or when the seeker has an exceptionally full bladder."

And of course, an appropriate end:
"Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"

Having just finished the book it was a sad thing to find out that it was infact dumbledore that had died like I thought it would have been.

He was in my mind the most loving character in this series. He believed Harry had his powers that voldemort didnt because of love. He really loved harry and all the kids at hogwarts and just was a great character. I sat crying for the last pages of the book and was just in shock even though i knew it was going to happen.

In all the books i have ever read dumbledore was indeed my favorite ever.

I don't know where to begin. Dumbledore was my favorite character and always will be - he was the epitome of good. The way he obviously cared about everyone, but especially the love and caring he showed Harry, was always heartwarming. He was a good man, he never showed dislike for someone solely because of what they were or where they came from, but for what they chose to become. He respected all people and creatures alike and treated everyone with kindness, respect and love.

From Dumbledore's first meeting with Harry in front of the Mirror of Erised, he took the time to explain to Harry the aspects of the enchanted mirror, and from then on, Dumbledore was always there to explain to Harry the things he could about the new world around him, and he always did this in a loving and caring way.

When he told Harry about the prophecy, it was obviously the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. Dumbledore's protection of Harry out of love and his confession to this after Sirius's death showed the amount of love he had for Harry. The many times he praised Harry and his abilities in the face of danger; the many times he faced Voldemort and survived only made their bond stronger.

I will truly miss Dumbledore - he was Harry's rock, and he left too many unanswered questions - too many secrets remained that he never got to disclose to Harry before his death. I don't think the story of Harry Potter will be the same - and Dumbledore's death has left a huge gaping hole in Harry's life, and my respect for the story. He will be sorely missed.

"I know you haven't" said Professor McGonagall, sounding half exasperated, half admiring. "But you're different. Everyone knows you're the only one You-Know- oh, all right, Voldemort, was frightened of."

"You flatter me," said Dumbledore calmly. "Voldemort had Powers I will never have."

"Only because you're too - well - noble to use them."

"It's lucky it's dark. I haven't blushed so much since Madam Pomfrey told me she liked my new earmuffs."

"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin the banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!

"Thank you!"

"I will say it again," said Dumbledore as the phoenix rose into the air and resettled itself upon the perch beside the door. "You have shown bravery beyond anything I could have expected of you tonight, Harry. you have shown bravery equal to those who died fighting Voldemort at the height of his powers. You have shouldered a grown wizard's burden and found yourself equal to it - and you have now given us all we have a right to expect."

"Is there a defense? I defy anyone who has watched you as I have - and I have watched you more closely than you can have imagined - not to want to save you more pain than you had already suffered. What did I care if numbers of nameless and faceless people and creatures were slaughtered in the vague future, if in the here and now you were alive, and well, and happy? I never dreamed that I would have such a person on my hands."

------

"But you came out of the maze last year, having watched Cedric Diggory die, having escaped death so narrowly yourself...and I did not tell you, though I knew, now Voldemort had returned, I must do it soon. And now, tonight, I know you have long been ready for the knowledge I have kept from you for so long, because you have proved that I should have placed the burden upon you before this. My only defense is this: I have watched you struggling under more burdens than any student who has ever passed through this school, and I could not bring myself to add another - the greatest one of all."

------

"I feel I owe you another explanation, Harry." said Dumbledore hesitantly. "You may, perhaps, have wondered why I never chose you as a prefect? I must confess ... that I rather thought .... you had enough responsibility to be going on with."

Harry looked up at him and saw a tear trickling down Dumbledore's face into his long silver beard.

And finally, the one thing I had predicted, and the one thing that I was so glad that Dumbledore did before he died:

"Now, as you already know, the wizard called Lord Voldemort has returned to this country. The Wizarding community is currently in a state of open warfare. Harry, whom Lord Voldemort has already attempted to kill on a number of occasions, is in even greater danger now than the day when I left him upon your doorstep fifteen years ago, with a letter explaining about his parents' murder and expressing the hope that you would care for him as though he were your own."

Dumbledore paused, and although his voice remained light and calm, and he gave no obvious sign of anger, Harry felt a kind of chill emanating from him and noticed that the Dursleys drew very slightly closer together.

"You did not do as I asked. You have never treated Harry as a son. He has known nothing but neglect and often cruelty at your hands. The best that can be said is that he has at least escaped the appalling damage you have inflicted upon the unfortunate boy sitting between you."

"Us - mistreat Dudders? What d'you -?" began Uncle Vernon furiously, but Dumbledore raised his finger for silence, a silence which fell as though he had struck Uncle Vernon dumb.

"The magic I evoked fifteen years ago means that Harry has powerful protection while he can still call this house 'home.' However, miserable he has been here, however unwelcome, however badly treated, you have at least, grudgingly, allowed him houseroom. This magic will cease to operate the moment that Harry turns seventeen; in other words, at the moment he becomes a man. I ask only this: that you allow Harry to return, once more, to this house, before his seventeenth birthday, which will ensure that the protection continues until that time."

I liked his odder moments, like when he chose Cockroach Cluster as his password . . .ewww!

And from The Cave - I am not worried, Harry, I am with you.

Dumbledore was the greatest wizard to ever have been born. Not because he had extraordinary powers in magic, but because he had an extrordinary capacity for compassion and love and forgiveness. The world--be it the wizarding world or the muggle one--won't ever be the same. No one will ever be able to visit Hogwarts without a tinge of sadness and regret that such a tragic waste befell our most beloved friend Dumbledore--so brave and noble and true. The most important thing Dumbledore ever said was that it was our actions that were most important. His final actions proved for all time how great he truly was. He will be sorely missed.

Like LHP said, I too had anticipated that Dumbledore would leave us at the end of this book, however, when it happened, I just couldn't stop the tears. Most of my favorite quotes have already been mentioned here, well, except for maybe one

"Alas! Ear wax!"

I think that as well as his "few words" really show his character. Dumbledore knew there was no end to evil in this world, but also that we can't make that our only focus, that having fun and enjoying life when you can are important too. Dumbledore always cared for his students, and protected them as well, even to the point of considering closing the school in CoS. Dumbledore cared so much that even facing his death, he tried to save Draco, (and may have) from a life of murder.

A twinkle in his eye
A wink
A smile
Wizdom of the ages
Innocence of the young
A heart of gold
A champion of the small
A lemon drop
You don't have to remember
Because you can never forget. . .

Dumbledore

We all keep thinking that all the good characters are being killed - I think this was a turning point as a man departed the series sitting closer to the evil side ....

I leave you with these thoughts ... remorse, regret and sorrow as he reflects back on his acts - just before returning to Hogwarts for his swansong ...

'I don't want ... don't make me ...'

'... don't like ... want to stop ...'

'I don't want to ... let me go ...'

'make it stop, make it stop'

'No, no, no ... no .. I can't ... I can't, don't make me, I don't want to ...'

'It's all my fault, all my fault'
'Please make it stop, I know I did wrong, oh, please make it stop and i'll never, never again..'

'Don't hurt them, don't hurt then, please, please, it's my fault, hurt me instead ...'

'Please, please, please, no ... not that, not that, I'll do anything ...'

'No more, please, no more ...'

'I want to die! I want to die! Make it stop, make it stop, I want to die!'

'KILL ME'

Goodbye Dumbledore .....

I was reading during my lunch break when Snape did the deed... I went back to work totally depresed and in a state of hopr that maybe it was a decoy. As soon as I go home I continued and by the end of the funeral I was actually crying. Dumbledore was probably my fave character. I loved the jokes he made and probably my fave moment was when he told Harry that thinking of hiding the p-stone in the mirror of Erised was one of his better ideas.

Farewell Dumbledore, you will long live in our hearts

as stupid as its sounds ( well maybe not ) while i was reading i kept hoping that dumbledore would show up and say to harry sorry to put you thought this , but im not dead it was all planned i will live to fight another day etc etc, even during the funeral i had hopes, but it seemns definate now unless its a major plot twist in the 7th book, and he is hiding somewhere and his potrait is a way of comunicating with causing suspicion, ( please say thats true ) when he was around people new things wouldnt turn out as bad , i mean when u think good wizard you think dumbledore ( well at least i did ) its just wrong, i dont think im alone in thinking that, im sure everyone will miss him
may he rest in peace and may harry kick voldemorts but :(

This is such a sad thread...

I have always thought Dumbledore as the greatest wizard.. I can't believe he's gone!!
He had been caring so much about Harry and supporting him with wise advices and help whenever he needed them, but.. now, Harry would have to stand on his own and face all the evil!

:( Favorite quote:
"Your parents loved you, Harry."

Dont' have the book right now, but I like the quote in GoF when Dumbledore ends with,
"Remember Cedric. Remember Cedric Diggory."

Good bye, Dumbledore!
