View Full Version : Hogwarts Protection *Spoiler*
Ok, Back onto the spells broken due to death thing again...
Dumbledore has placed many forms of protection on the school- are they still in place? Or have the charms/spells been broken due to his demise?
If they haven't been broken, do any of the other teachers know how to lift them in case of emergency- like Voldy goes sick in the great hall and everyone has to apperate...
No really tho, like when they lift the no apperation so the students can learn to apperate...will the portraits listen to anyone else's instructions to change the password? Will McGonagall sack Filch...oh. off topic, but wishful thinking!...

Well as DD and Harry were flying back to the castle after seeing the Dark mark DD lifted a number of enchantments so they could enter.
But I think some of the protection would remain at the school regardless of who the headmaster/mistress is. That position has changed hands many many times before, and all the previous heads are dead. Imagine how vunerable the school would be if that happened every time a previous head died. (Not saying they all would hold the position until death, but surely over the years it's happened before)

Professor Flitwick would know how to protect the castle. He explained very well how the Fidelius Charm worked in book three - I think he would know almost as much about protective charms and spells as Dumbledore.
What was odd about the scene where Harry and Dumbledore flew onto the castle grounds was Harry's note of Dumbledore lifting the protection so they could fly in:
As they flew over the dark, twisting lane down which they had walked earlier, Harry heard, over the whistling of the night air in his ears, Dumbledore muttering in some strange language again. He thought he understood why as he felt his broom shudder when they flew over the boundary wall into the grounds: Dumbledore was undoing the enchantments he himself had set around the castle so they could enter at speed.
The magic protecting the castle must have been old magic - why else would Dumbledore have spoke a different language?
It might not have necessarily been old magic, but perhaps magic that was created by another magical community/creature. My thoughts go to people from other countries - surely not all the spells are in english/latin. If someone creates their own spell, they seem to have the right to name it what they want, so I think that he could have been talking in another language.
But, I'm sure there is lots of old magic protecting the school as well. I mean, given how long it's been around, there would have to be.
I agree that there are probably some unending charms/protections that remain no matter who is in charge or who set them. Also agreed that the other professors could probably come up with some pretty good deterrents themselves.
Tonks seems to know a lot about the protections set around Hogwarts after she rescues Harry from the Hogwarts Express. As such, I get the feeling that it wasn't just Dumbledore who placed a lot of the current protections on the castle, but maybe parts of the Ministry of Magic as well - the Aurors come to mind here, which would explain how Tonks knew. As such, I think those would definitely remain intact and help protect the castle..
I do think that things such as the Non-Apparation one have been in place for decades, and wouldn't just be removed .. and there are probably some other spells in place that were originally put on the castle for general protection..
I'm sure that such protections can be checked and that McGonagall and Flitwick will probably do so and reapply ones that they think need re-applying.. While they might not know the ones Dumbledore himself put on the castle, I'm sure they can put similar ones on it, even if they aren't as strong..
