My first impression was that it was a someone having a laugh because there is a loose cover - and he just turned it around the other way - but he claims he took that loose cover off and that is the inside hard cover ...

... Interesting fact - UK Adult just has a plain, black cover - both sides ;)

Ours is the same as the UK one, sorta.. I mean, you take off the cover and it's a purple book with a black binding.. or vice versa, can't remember..

That's a whole load of money just for a misprinted book like that. My aunt actually had a copy of OotP (that she bought right when I bought my copy actually, we were together and it was the first day it came out), and halfway through the text flips upside down and is backwards..

Of course, he could have removed the jacket and put it on wrong and sold it for $10,000.
