First of all, if there is a thread already on this, feel free to move me. It is just that I couldn't find one...

the Dementors took an unusual liking to Harry according to PoA the movie, and I am wondering why. Sure, he has experienced horrors more than most, but it was pointed out that the Dementors were following orders. They were after Sirius, on Ministry orders, and in OotP, they were after Harry on Umbridge's order, so why go after Harry any other time? The movie makes us believe the Dementors specifically targeted him, but I can't remember if the book gave off this feeling as well or not.

I began to wonder if Voldemort had given the Dementors orders before he attacked Harry (you know, just in case) or if they sense something of Voldemort in Harry.

PoA had clues in it for future books. The whole dementor thing was changed around, and it could have been purely artistic license, but what if is a hint that the Dementors will be sent after Harry in book 7? We know they have been breeding. I just hope there hasn't been any gene modification going on to make them immune to Patronus'

The dementors are attracted to emotions. They suck all the happiness out of you and leave only the bad thoughts and memories. Harry's supposed power over Voldemort is his ability to love, which is an ability that everyone has to some extent, well, except for Voldemort. It could be the power that Voldemort knows not is a huge store of power.

The dementors are attracted to Harry because he has so much of it - it's like a feeding frenzy. Remember in PoA when Harry was playing Quidditch and the dementors stormed the field, not to feed off the emotions of the hundreds of people there who were cheering on the match, but on Harry who had just spotted the snitch and was excitedly in pursuit - when he looked down and saw the dementors on the field looking up at him. It would seem he definitely has what the dementors want!

Forte kinda makes a good point there ...
Harry is very passionate - we have seen over and over again how Harry reacts very much based on feelings - I think this is why Dumbledore said that is Harry's greatest strength.
I think Harry exudes passion and feeling in all he does - I think he also seems more externally expressive than both Hermione and Ron - the parallels of the two people he spends so much time with.

The upshot is the is like a banquet to the Dementor's - he is that filled with emotion that he would be like a magnet to them.
I think this also echoes why he has so much problems closing his mind - he is just so externally emotional that he has trouble controlling them.
