......and either must die at the hands of the other for neither can live while the other survives......

Several theories have evolved regarding Voldermort being allowed to live, I think in this quote from the prophecy we can all read that it is not possible for both Harry and Voldermort to survive. Assuming Voldermort dies we all know what happens and the need to read book seven is somewhat reduced (aside from the obvious desire to see how it all plays out - plotline etc.) However, there is a third alternative, they could both die!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bare with me on this one a little longer (he says as half the readers log off in disgust at such a heinous thought  ) What if Voldermort was trying to kill one of Harry's loved ones, the obvious candidate for this being Ginny, and Harry steps in and takes the AK himself, thus Harry dies but the sacrifice he makes (please don't assume exactly the same results as with Lilly and Harry. Harry already has special powers and protections that none of us really understand so work with me on this one) also causes the destruction of Voldermort. Maybe the two "brother" wands combining in a similar way to the way they did in GoF in the graveyard scene. Yet again the subjects of love and choices!!!!!!!

She does say that more characters will die. That means that everyone is on the table.

I can't see Voldermort living either. With his knowledge, he is a danger as long as he can speak.

I don't know if will be at the end, but Wormtail will take one for Harry somewhere in the book, because of that life bond from Harry saving his life, and Wormtail owing Harry his life. I thought she had pretty much abandoned this in the GoF, but there is a loophole for wormtail, he could have let Mr Crouch escape to warn Harry after his son left for Hogwarts to impersonate Mad-Eye Moody. And he could have died instead of Harry had the wands not intersected and saved Harry.

She always has the trump card of Fawlks to save Harry too. But I am thinking Harry will have a lot of near misses in book 7. I hope Hermonie is brewing up some Felix ;)

You know I think that line isnt a clear as it can appear - we have a few threads discussing the prophecy - might want to have a look at a few thoughts ...

For me - Voldemort has to die - because if he is left living - JKR will never be able to put the Potter series to bed.
Now - with that said - I am not 100% convinced Harry will live as well ... and I am still of the opinion that Harry has these great magical powers because of the backfired spell that night - I think there is a real possiblility that Harry will be left a muggle at the very least at the end of the series ...
If Harry is a Horcrux like a few people have suggested - and I kinda like as well - then the phrase quoted takes on a whole load of other possibilites ...

Voldermort will die! She's killed Sirius and Dumbledore she won't kill Harry as well. Surely nobody's that cruel!

I really like the idea of Harry being the final horcrux and they (Voldemorte and Harry) both die at the end and that's Harry's final sacrifice and yadda yadda...
Also, taking a closer look at what that quote is saying, if you choose to look at it really literally, you have the question of why they are both still surviving. I think there has to be some conditions upon which this will follow through. I'm trying to think up reasons for why the ultimate battle hasn't had to happen yet and I'm wondering if it'll coincide with Harry's coming of age.
