View Full Version : Ghosts from Voldemort wand
Hi guys, just today I was just ending goblet of fire (again) and something caught my attention, remember the fight between Voldemort and Harry in the cementery, a bond was created between the wands and from Voldemort's wand the ghosts of the people he killed came out, the last one (cedric) being the first and so on, untill Harry parents came out. But, the last one was Lilly Potter and as far as I know, James was the first one to be killed and therefore it was supposed to be te last one to came out. What do you think???

orion it was supposed to be in reverse order--Lily came out and told Harry that his father would be here soon
I am not sure how she knew that though because the amount of returned shadows wasnt an exact science
In my copy of the book Lily comes out and then James. She tells Harry to hold on because his father is coming. Perhaps it was a misprint? There is a dialogue between Harry and Lily before James comes out, though, so it seems it would be really disjointed in your copy if the names were the only things reversed . . . are you sure that was the order? I just doublechecked mine and they come out in the right order . . .
There was a batch of books where the wand shadows were reversed and this was debated alot and on a site I used to belong to we got to thinking about something JKR recently dismissed, James and Lupin ...
But if you look around the JKR news you will see she confirmed a mis print in some versions of GoF - it is the first editions that have the wand order incorrect I think?

My copy of GoF gives the following order of the smoky figures that come from Voldemort's wand that night:
Cedric
Frank
Bertha
Lily
James
which I believe is the correct reverse order for the murders Voldemort committed.
Seems that the publishers are taking liberties when they do reprints and put in different words depending on different parts of the world!

Yes...the first editions were printed in correctly..where james comes out first and then Lily. When I first read the book I got confused cause my book has the incorrect order. After the mistake was raelized, it was corrected and the later versions have the proper order.
There has been a lot of disucussion about this topic elsewhere because so many people thought it was important. I am looking for the link ot thie interview at the moment, but JKR is quoted as saying the book was just wrong. Hopefully I can find the link and post it to clear up the confusion.

ETA: This (http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/faq_view.cfm?id=19) is the link to JKR's text only version of the FAQ in which she addressed this very issue as part of a poll question. I'll copy it here in case people have trouble accessing it.
It reads in pertinent part:
Q: At the end of 'Goblet of Fire', in which order should Harry's parents have come out of the wand?
A: Lily first, then James. That’s how it appears in my original manuscript but we were under enormous pressure to edit it very fast and my American editor thought that was the wrong way around, and he is so good at catching small errors I changed it without thinking, then realised it had been right in the first place. We were all very sleep-deprived at the time
Thanks for passing the link there Atticus :D
It was a divine misprint and lead to some of the best wild spec theories I have ever seen in the world of OL Harry Potter - sadly JKR quashed it like all the other mis-print issues - shame thou :p

yeah, just imagine all the ideas people could have come up with if JKR hadnt specifically said it was a mistake. hmmm...
Well - yah really!!
Some of her or publisher mistakes lead to the best speculation - it's just a shame she quashes them - I think she does it after she thinks we have all finished guessing what it could mean ....
I think I should close this one off really - thanks all!
