Having just bought all the audio books, am listening to Philosopher's Stone, and got to the part when Dumbledore arrives at Privet Drive. In describing his appearance, we hear that he has a crooked nose which looks as if it has been broken at least twice.

I wonder how he broke his nose then? Wonder if it was an accident or during some magnificent battle?

I assume that one time could have been when fighting Grindlewald. Speaking of, I wonder how long ago that battle was and how old Dumbledore was when they fought.

Anyway, I think that would be one time and I like to think the other time would have been walking along, eating some candy and he fell on his face and broke his nose. don't know why, but that's what came to mind.

I am racking the brain to think of any mention other than the one you mentioned that might indicate how his nose got broke twice ...
Assumption is the same as Boing and say that one might have been when he was fighting Grindelwald ...

Dumbledore doesnt give the impression of being a 'back street brawler', I had his brother down as being more like that ...

Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald
in 1945.
JK Rowling interview October 16, 2000 (http://www.scholastic.com/harrypotter/author/transcript2.htm)
Q: How old is old in the wizarding world, and how old are Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall?
A: Dumbledore is a hundred and fifty, and Professor McGonagall is a sprightly seventy. Wizards have a much longer life expectancy than Muggles. (Harry hasn't found out about that yet.)
According to publishing dates, GoF was released on July 8, 2000, so this interview would've taken place between the release of GoF and OotP.

So - defeat took place in 1945. In October 2000, Dumbledore would've been 150 - so he would've been 150 in summer of 1995, making him a round 100 when he fought Grindelwald if I did that math right.

Ok, that was pretty off topic. Anyway, I definitely think it's possible that he broke his nose during the fight with Grindelwald. The other nose breaking could have been a random accident, or maybe Dumbledore was also a Quidditch player during his younger years. ;)

Good idea Tonks, never thought of Dumbledore as playing Quidditch!

I know that somewhere we find out that he likes ten pin bowling, maybe he got in a tussle with a couple of the pins?!
