Chapter 8 - The Deathday Party

Summary

The Chapter starts in October and talks about students all with colds and Madam Pomfrey with her Pepperup Potion.
Harry returns to the Gryffindor Common Room after practicing Quidditch and comes across Sir Nick, who isn’t happy about being rejected by the Headless Hunt yet again.
Mrs Norris signals the arrival of a cold ridden Filch who isn’t happy he has spent hours cleaning frogs brains all over dungeon five.
He reacts to the sight of Harry dripping mud all over the floor and takes Harry to his office.
Harry sits worried as Filch starts to write out the details of Harry’s crime.
This is disrupted by a loud bang – Peeves has broken something and so Filch leaves.
Harry notices a letter on the desk and we learn Filch is taking a Quik Spell course.
Filch returns to see Harry reading the letter and quickly tries to cover it up – then releases Harry from the office.
Harry is met by Nick and he is happy that Nick saved him by getting Peeves to break box.
As a return on the favour Nick asks Harry to go to his Deathday party and Harry agrees.
Back in the Gryffindor Common Room Harry meets Hermione and Ron and breaks the news that Halloween he will be going to Deathday party, Hermione seems keen on the idea – Ron less so.
Halloween arrives and Harry is regretting about accepting the invite when he see’s the Great Hall all setup for the Halloween Great Feast.
At 7.00pm they head to the dungeons for Nick’s party.
Nick invites them into the party mournfully and they step inside to see hundred’s of pearly white ghosts and also thy spot the Fat Friar, The Bloody Baron and Moaning Myrtle.
Ron is excited to see food – but is quickly uninterested when he finds out the food is rotten and mouldy.
We are then treated to a moment of nastiness from Peeves as he upsets Myrtle at Hermione’s expense.
Next a horn signals the arrival of Headless Horsemen – Nick however isn’t pleased to see them.
There is an exchange of banter and then the lead Headless Horseman – Sir Patrick sets about upsetting Nick’s Deathday Party.
At this point Harry, Hermione and Ron decide to leave.
As they leave Harry begins to hear voices and sprints off to find the source – he thinks someone is going to die.
As they arrive at the top of some stairs – Hermione spots something – daubed on the walls is the following..
“The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir, beware”
Ron spots something hanging underneath it.
In fact it is Mrs Norris hanging from a torch bracket, stiff as a board, eyes wide.
Ron tries to get them to leave but it is too late, the students are on their way back from the Halloween feast.
They all stop and go quiet as they see the trio in the middle of the room.
We suddenly hear ..
“Enemies of the heir, Beware! You’ll be next, Mudbloods!”
It was Draco looking all flushed and happy at the sight of the petrified cat.
Major Events

The Deathday Party

7.00pm – it’s time for the Deathday Party!
Long thin jet black tapers, all burning bright blue
The music is not for Ron’s liking – it sounds like a thousand fingernails scraping an enormous blackboard.
Sir Nick greets them in a mournful tone and we see JKR make another reference to the music as they enter the dungeon – quivering sound of thirty musical saws – nice!
It is remarked that hundreds of pearly white, translucent people are drifting around.
A chandelier over head blazed Midnight Blue with a thousand black candles.
The temperature is cold – they see mist before them – like stepping into a freezer.
Once again we are drawn notice of the Hufflepuff ghost, the Fat Friar and also the Slytherin ghost ‘covered in sliver blood stains’ – this will be the Bloody Baron – and for some reason the other ghosts are giving him a wide berth?
We then move onto the dining spread and an array of smelly food, rotten fish, cakes that are burnt black, maggot infested haggis and mouldy green cheese.
We also have Nick’s Deathday cake – Sir Nicolas de Mimsy Porpington died 31st October 1492
As far as eating – Harry observes ghosts opening their mouths and then passing through the food.
Harry actually asks if ghosts can taste it – a ghost replies almost sadly.
Hermione pipes up that ‘she expects they let the food rot for more flavour’
We then have the scene where Peeves sets about upsetting Myrtle at the expense of Hermione.
He knows how to wind her up as well – he tells her that Hermione thought she looked nice.
Myrtle is suspicious of this – she says people call her fat Myrtle, ugly Myrtle then Peeves nicely points out she forgot spotty Myrtle – of course this makes her burst into tears and glide away with Peeves still chasing her calling her spotty … little git huh!
Nick appears and then tells them he needs to go make a speech … as he gets the orchestra to quieten down
He is just about to speak then a horn sounds – and a dozen, that is another 12 all, horses emerge through the wall mounted by 12 Headless Horsemen.
The leader is announced as Sir Patrick, a person Nick has little time for.
Seems Sir Patrick is the reason Nick doesn’t get into the Headless Hunt.
Nick goes to the podium to try his speech again, climbing with an icy-blue spotlight …
As he begins to talk the Headless horsemen begin to play a game of Headless hockey to the delight of the crowds – but to Nick’s annoyance!
It is shortly after this the trio feel it is time to leave.

Points of Note & Interest

Other Interesting points and facts
Half an inch of skin and sinew is what is keeping Sir Nick nearly headless
Highly polished chains and manacles – worrying!
Large purple letter with silver writing for the letter from Kwik Spell

Plot

Story Specific
Harry leaves the Deathday party and hears a voice ‘… rip … tear … kill …’
It is the same voice he hears in Lockheart’s office earlier.
His initial thoughts lead him to the wall and he listens with all his might.
‘ …. So hungry … for so long ...’
‘… kill … time to kill ...’
With this Harry feels the voice is moving away – he sets off to try and follow it.
Hermione and Ron of course can’t hear it –and Harry frantically tries to get them to understand.
‘… I smell blood … I SMELL BLOOD!’
It’s at this point Harry is convinced someone is going to die and goes into an all out panic.
This progresses to Harry, Hermione and Ron stumbling across the writing on the wall – warning them the Chamber of Secrets was opened and enemies of the heir should beware!
We also see a petrified Mrs Norris – a victim of what we later find out is a basilisk.
We also see Myrtle in this chapter – and once again her part in the story is fully played out later.

Septology Specific

Because JKR makes the point someone late in life will so magic – it would be only right to mention Filch and his Qwik Spell course at this juncture – just in case we find out it was him – not sure it is a septology clue as such – but relevant to the latter books.
