Soooo...I have been away for a while (I had a lovely holiday, by the way) and I began reading HBP again when I got it back from my cousin. Something immediately jumped out at me and I have been forming a theory ever since...

Forgive me, because I can't find the quote, but Snape says somewhere that Dumbledore's reflexes aren't as quick as they used to be.
This got me thinking...I don't believe the ring itself had a curse on it, but rather like the locket, it was stored in something, in muggle terms, like a vat of acid...or in wizard terms, a strange potion, and the only way to get it out was by hand.
Dumbledore's hand looks blackened and dead, and delving into an unknown potion could do that. Dumbledore knows there are protections surrounding each Horcrux, but also knows he has destroy them, so would be willing to give up the use of his non-wand hand to weaken Voldemort.

Now, I started thinking about the other horcruxes after this...
The ring, in its potion, hurt the takers hand.
The locket, with its potion, hurt the takers mind.
The diary, if we assume it was meant to do it, hurt the takers soul (in the long run I believe this was designed so he could return and collect his other horcruxes).

My theory is that the protections surrounding the Horcuxes were designed to severely weaken whoever tried to take them. We know Voldemort only ever feared one man, so he may have only had Dumbledore in mind when he did it.
Think about it...by the time one person got through all the horcruxes, and found their way to Voldemort, they would not have the ability to finish him off, and assuming it was only Dumbledore he had in mind, with DD gone, Voldemort feared nothing...

That's a great theory there Kash! I can see the protections being aimed at DD. And if so, it could take an interesting turn now that Harry is on the hunt. And, interesting that RAB got there before DD too. I like that idea. And it makes sense that the first thing he set out to do was to kill DD. . . not Harrry. I assume he reasoned that without DD, Harry would be an easy target, hence the quote in GoF, about fighting Harry without DD there to help him. (of course that backfired too) I need to think on this a bit more, but it really makes sense. Good one!

Even without a Dumbledore link the premise is still sound - the chances of one person finding all Horcruxes was pretty remote - because each one was protected in a different way.
I actually think that he might have reserved 'hiding' the diary Horcrux until the end because he knew if all else failed and the others were found, that this would also had the added kick of possessing the person that took it - killing them and allowing Voldemort to re-birth from the death ...
Perhaps he decided to hand that over very close to when he decided to go kill the Potter child - he knew that the one with the power to destroy him would be his target - almost by giving it to a DE it wouldnt have got into the wrong hands or been taken and ensured that this special Horcrux always had the potential to re-birth him even if all the others failed.
