OK, I was sure this is a thread somewhere, but I can't seem to find it, so here goes.

In HBP, Snape basically says that Dumbledore forgave him and took him back because he was sorry that he had some part in the death of Lily and James.

Not that I would want to call Snape a liar or anything ( ), but that makes no sense whatsoever, if we stick to the thought that Snape started teaching on September 1st. And why is that? Probably because James and Lily were killed on October 31st of that year, nearly two months after Snape came to the school.

I think it was pretty obvious to us that this was not really the reason, but if he was willing to go into the story with Bellatrix, why wouldn't he tell her the truth about the whole trust issue?

So, why hasn't he ever told the truth about what made Dumbledore trust him, and what is it that he did?

I have always wondered that myself. Even the other Order members had a hard time swallowing the story that Snape apologized for what he did and Dumbledore was fine with that.

There is so much more to that story then we are let in on. I can't see DD being so gullible as to let a known Death Eater teach at Hogwarts.

I keep thinking there is an unbreakable vow somewhere. If it's between Snape and DD I wonder if DD could not reveal this for some reason. (Or because it was between them he chose to keep it quiet) Or if it's between Snape and Lilly and DD was the caster maybe he promised not to tell anyone. (Or can't tell anyone)

I read a wild theory somewhere that Snape was related to DD so that is why he trusted him.

Dumbledore believe that Snape is very regretful for his part in the Potters death - but Dumbledore also says to be fair to Snape, he had no idea when he told Voldemort about the prophecy how Voldemort would interpret them and when he did find out - he then swapped over the Dumbledore's service ...
This seems reasonable right?
But there is still inconsistencies in the story - because if Snape was still in service, how come he didn't tell Dumbledore when Voldemort made his move?
I think Snape would have known when Voldemort was going for his big plan - maybe not the exact date but still - seems there is a breakdown ...
Snape found out that the Potters were in target - he decides to try and help - but still something went wrong and Snape nor Dumbledore got Voldemort's final move on the Potters right ...

There is something else that is very important - something that makes selfish Snape want to help the Potters when one of them was his sworn enemy ... we are doing the Lily/Snape spec but that still represents the most logical in my mind ..
