View Full Version : How can Professor Umbridge be in more than one place at once?

I was rereading OOTP and noticed that after Hagrid and Professor Trelawney are put on probation, it says that "every single Divination and Care of Magical Creatures lesson was conducted in the presence of Umbrigde and her clipboard." (OOTP page 552) My question is, how is that possible?? Are we to assume that she is just watching over Harry's classes or all of them?? When is she suppose to be teaching?? Realistically how is she suppose to have a free hour ever time one of these classes are going on?? We know that there are more than one of each class everyday, so how can she be in more than one place at the same time?? I thought of the time turner, but I don't think this is a possibility. Maybe JKR just made a mistake or maybe I am reading way to much into this.

You are right Kellerelli! I remember thinking it seemed strange when I read it, but got distracted before I could think about it further.

Every single Divination and Care of Magical Creatures lesson was now conducted in the presence of Umbridge and her clipboard.

I would say a possible oversight by JKR, but with Umbridge’s position and connections in the ministry, it would also be easy for her to gain access to a timeturner.

Even if she only supervised the classes that Harry attended, that would still keep her away from her own DADA classes. (Not that she really taught much . . . read the book and take a test . . .) I still take it to mean that she was at all of the classes, waiting for either Hagrid or Trelawney (or both) to mess up. The remainder of the paragraph focuses on Trelawney’s classes, and in detail of what she did during the classes, which seems entail that she was at more than just the classes Harry attended.

Interesting point, SPF re: Timeturner. AND, more importantly, it would imply that all of the Ministry's time turners were NOT desctroyed by the kids at the end so there's at least one still available.

"How can Professor Umbridge be in more than one place at once?"

Well - my opinion: She can't. I think she is neither clever nor energetic enough to use a time-turner as adeptly as Hermione. Probably the expression "every single lesson" is just an exaggeration to underline how relentlessly she harassed these teachers whenever she could.

I don't know . . . JKR is usualy quite careful about her word usage. If she wanted to simply show the relentless efforts Umbridge was making to discredit the teachers she could have worded it "nearly every single lesson" and that would have gotten the point accross.

She's the High Inquisitor she could just reschedule their classes so that she would be able to be there.

a possibility, but I think it would still be difficult for none of the CoMC and Div to overlap either . . . there are 4 houses, and seven grade levels. Even with classes being conbined with two houses at once that still leaves14 classes a week for each subject, a total of 28 classes between the two subjects. The kids have no more than 4 classes in a day, still makes it impossible to be in all of the classes even if Unbridge rescheduled her own.

This makes sense but you have to remember they can't take either of these classes until 3rd year and not everyone takes them. But, even then she still wouldn' be able to make it to every class being that she probably teaches 4 classes a day. And while I am thinking about it, how does Umbridge make it the career advice sessions or are we again suppose to believe that she only goes to Harry's?

I thought that Umbridge only attended Harry's . . . she just wanted go thwart him any way she could. The career advice was with the heads of house, so I know she wouldn't have been at them all.
