In Chapter 5 Diagon Alley in PS/SS, the entrance to Gringotts is described has having a verse warning thieves of their fate.

Further into the Septology we have the Sorting Hat giving 'warnings' via a verse, rather than a straightforward warning, and indeed this is repeated in subsequence books.

Is there anything in this, or just the wizarding way?

I guess I never thought of it as more than just a clever way of writing. Just to make it more interesting and enjoyable. The Sorting Hat's songs in particular would be kind of monotonous to read in prose, so I think the song helps to keep it short and simple to read.

But that's just an initial impression - can anyone else think of other times verses/rhymes have been used?

You find IRL that rhyme and poems are used to get people to remember things - it is like music - it seems to stick in the mind more than just text ..
It could also me like a semi spell that by reading it - it is committed to the brain maybe?
Perhaps JKR uses it to show the many depths of her writing skills as well :p
