“For some reason, the back of his neck prickled. The very dust and silence in here seemed to tingle with some secret magic.”
This is a description of Harry's first impression of Ollivanders wand shop which we are introduced to in Chapter 5, Diagon Alley in PS/SS.
Is this a feeling of Dark Magic in the air?! Was Harry experiencing his first inkling of the presence of Voldemort or even a Death Eater?
What do others think about this?
That is interesting. I have observed times in the books where Harry has shown similar responses to the presence of others or to magic around him. I think he has good instincts and being magical helps him out a lot in this way.
With regards to that particular feeling, he could have been picking up from the overhwelming magic of the wands or perhaps his particular wand calling to him.
But I like the bit where you said he could have been picking up on a Death Eater - do you think Ollivander could be a Death Eater? Or perhaps there was someone else in the shop that day that was waiting to see which wand Harry would get?
Since reading that chapter the first time, I didn't like the feeling in Ollivander's shop nor did I particularly care for him, what with the way he was described. I just sort of thought of him as a creepy old man, but a DE - that's something to think about. He seems to know a lot about the people to whom he has provided wands in the past.
The way he described Voldemort's wand doing great thing, terrible but great was weird, but I'm not sure if he would be a DE. He just seemed in awe of something a wand could do and I think was looking at Harry and wondering whether or not Harry would also do terrible but great things with the wand's twin.
There are people that are so into their work or point of view that they can only see life from that point of view. Perhaps Ollivander is like that?
I am not sure of the word I am looking for to describe him, but Boing made a good point about what Ollivander said about both Voldemort and Harry's wands. He also wrote to Dumbledore to tell him that Harry had been sold the second wand. Maybe he is not interested in good or evil but just how well his wands perform - no matter what the damage cause?

I have always felt that there was some connection between Voldemort and Ollivander, and this is linked to what Boing says - about Voldemort doing great things, which sounds very much like when Voldemort is speaking to Harry in front of the Mirror of Erised and saying about power, and yes, Gini, I have a feeling also that Ollivander is linked to the Death Eaters!!
Once again an agree is coming here ...
There is something not right about that guy - and I said in another thread he was also able to recall the events of the Potters Attack pretty well ...
The feeling Harry was getting could be seen a few ways ...
He was in a magical area and I think his magical side was craving for the wand - like it is the antenna to a persons magical essence and i think his magical essence was responding to actually having something near that would channel his power trapped inside ...
Another view is that he was sensing the aura of Ollivander ... and that Ollivander is more than he first appears - as stated above he does seem to talk about Voldemort in mixed ways ..
It could be a misplaced pride that his craftsmanship could be so powerful ... he feels almost proud that something he created was actually made famous ...
But worth considering is that he sold both wands - both brother core wands ... that in itself asks some interesting questions ...
