View Full Version : The Foe Glass....

I'm sure everyone knows at the end of GoF, when Barty Crouch Jr. as Moody brings Harry to his office, and the foe glass is in there. Harry can see Dumbledore, McGonagal and Snape in it, right before they burst into the room. Harry is the one looking in the Foe Glass at the time, not Crouch Jr. Does it show Dumbledore, McGonagal and Snape because it is Barty Crouch Jr.'s foe glass, and they are his enemies, or because they are Harry's? Is the Foe Glass like the Mirror of Erised and changes for each person that looks into it, or does it only show the owners enemies? If it were true that it showed the owners enemies, wouldn't it show the real Moody's enemies, and not Dumbledore, McGonagal and Snape?
OK, something else just jumped out at me, and I can't believe I didn't see it earlier, but if it was showing Crouch Jr.'s enemies, and not Harry's, then why wasn't Harry in the mirror? I think that could possibly lead to some out there theories, so perhaps I should continue this elsewhere...
It is a great observation!
Looking at the possibilities ...
Harry seeing his foes : Well I could see Harry seeing Snape, my DiE side would also have no problems with Dumbledore - but McGonagal remains to me to be the one that this wouldnt fit in with - afterall she has never really given any impression that she is counter to Harry - and out of all the people around him - I think she would be the most genuine .. we seen this over and over in the books, even as early as PS/SS.
Harry seeing Barty's foes : Well - I think it could be assumed he would see all of those as a foe - but I would have expected Harry in there as well ...
I think that would represent a possible best overall answer - but how in touch is the foe glass - as in how deep can it sense?
I might have also expected to see a few other people in there - but I wonder if this is a realtime device and see's impending foe?
Harry seeing real Moody's foes : Once again that would be interesting wouldnt it?
We saw that the real Moody is somewhat respected and have also become a constant to Harry - someone he could trust.
I would have also expected maybe the for glass in this scenario to put Barty in there - because at the time he would have been a foe to Moody?
Interesting observation. Of course, at first glance (and first reading), I just assumed it was Barty Jr.'s foes. As for Harry not being in there - is Harry really a foe? I mean, he presented no real danger to Barty Jr. Sure, he is a foe of Voldemort and as such, that might carry over, but I think of it more as immediate dangerous people. So, in that sense, there was no reason for him to fear Harry. He did, however, have to fear the others - that they would find out what he was doing, who he really was, etc.
I think that the foe glass has to be charmed for the specific person. I don't think it is like a boggart where it just transfers to the person closest. So, in that case, Barty Jr. would have performed a charm to make his own foes appear.
Yah that would appear consistant and in keeping - but couple the above with another thread Wheezy raised about when Snape entered the office and saw himself in there ... now then - that would give the impression that it is changing to the holder ...
Otherwise it would have shown all three again no?
So - if it is changing for the holder - wouldn't it be sweet if JKR just dropped in there that indeed Harry's foes and the three that came to save him? :D
Why else would it change for Snape?
Sorry this is another thread - I just found it interesting that happened - I would have accepted it was showing Barty's foes to Harry if it didnt change once Snape looked ...
