Quoted from Pg 17 THE BOY WHO LIVED (PS/SS)
Dumbledore said, "scars can come in useful. i have one myself above my left knee which is a perfect map of the London Underground....."
then we are told about the Gringotts Bank that it is underground.
i was wondering whether this SCAR of London Underground is a kind of Marauder's map or just a scar like Harry's.
and if the former is the correct  ....... then did it show the invasion at the Gringotts? :D

Good point - Gringotts is in London so maybe the underground tunnels and vaults at Gringotts are directly below the London Underground, which would make Dumbledore's scar very useful indeed!

While I doubt that it is a marauders map style of map, if it does have Gringotts on their, I am wondering if there could be some kind of map within a map, perhaps a map specifically of Gringotts. Could there be a way that that might come in handy? I seem to remember JKR saying that Dumbledore's scar would come in handy in the future, but I may just be imagining it. If his scar edoes contain a map of Gringott's, could there be something inside, and Dumbledore could use his map to get to it quickly?
I don't necessarily think she said it would be "handy," but I do think she said she really likes the scar and we could see it later on . . . as for Gringotts linking up with the Underground, why not? The Muggles would never notice, right?
That would be pretty strange to see people walking around on your leg (if it were like the Marauders Map). And, what are the chances that Dumbledore would have said the charm to reveal the figures moving at the exact time that someone was breaking in? That's a pretty far-fetched coincidence . . .

I think by the London Underground, JKR meant the London subway system. Not so much all the sewers, pipes, basements and underground activity of London. If it was that way, could you imagine how gross or revealing it could be?
Imagine for a moment...
Dumbledore: (looking at knee) Ah I see a sewer rat just ran the length of 143rd Street and is now shredding an old rag. He is licking some sort of food off of it, no it's just sewer slime. Wait, he sees a small mouse, and he is running to catch it, oh just missed it and yes, the rat got it and is enjoying his dinner now.
On the other hand if it could coincide with Gringotts that would be very useful.
Oooh great idea. We have speculated that it could be something simple and Muggle that is the downfall of Voldemort. What if the final battle takes place in the London Underground? And Dumbledore has a perfect map.

Yeah, you're right Boing, she said that we may know more about it later on, but not necessarily that it was handy:
How did Dumbledore get his scar in the London Underground?
You may find out one day. I am very fond of that scar.
I am really wondering why she is so fond of his scar...

interesting.... WFF really interesting.
Now i am agreeing with Meridith that it would be a lot weird to see people walking on your Knee :D
but still if 4 students can work out on a map and invent Marauder's Map, then y not their headmaster
as this might come HANDY as word's been used quite a few times above. i was wondering how big would it be?
I think JKR is fond of the scar because it has a relevance just like Harry's - but as JKR also said about Harry's the shape isnt the most remarkable thing about it - so I am gonna say the shape is irrelevant and what we should be looking at how gave him the scar.
I think JKR mentioned it for a specific reason - to show that perhaps Dumbledore was marked at some point - not in the same way as Harry but all the same.
I think the link to Gringotts seems a little tenuous - sorry.
I like this idea. Perhaps he knows about the link between Voldemort and Harry (or was at least suspicious of it until he found out for sure) because he had a similar link to another wizard due to his scar . . . it's possible.

We know from his wizarding card he defeated the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, could this perhaps be where his scar came from? Maybe this is where Dumbledore's theories with Harry originate from, his experiances.
I think JKR may just be find of the scar because it is so eccentric, so Dumbledore. It made me laugh when I read it and perhaps it made her laugh when she wrote it.
JKR was quick to point out that the shape of Harry's scar wasnt the most important thing about it - so I just figure the same with Dumbledore.
It almost helps JKR to move peoples attention away from the comment by saying it looks like a lightening bolt - or it looks like a map - I think the real reasons behind it are not in the shape but perhaps how they got it - or who gave it?

I agree, the orgin of the scar seems to be more important than the location and the shape of the scar itself.
I really don't know what else to say on this thread, this one had got me stumped.
I originally thought that the scar was just (as Meredith said) a way to make Dumbledore more eccentric. Like his "few words" at the Welcome Feast . . . we can try to look for meaning in them, but there most likely isn't any.
However, with the comment from JKR that we might see the scar again, it just makes me think that there actually might be something to it. I agree - it is probably not the shape of it, but it could be a connection/link of some sort . . .

you know, I never really thought any further about D's scar, just took it as a laugh, but, I can see how a map of the subway system may come in handy!
I still cant help but think this is almost like Harry and Voldemort - as in Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
It seems strange that both have or need to defeat a dark lord - both have scars and indeed Dumbledore takes such an interest in how me can help Harry do this.
I think the only link I can draw is that of above - the prophecies roll and roll - each time some dark lord is destroyed another emerges and it is told that only a specific person can vanquish them ...
