why hundreds of owls come with the post at Breakfast time?
i mean y they wait for the breakfast time?
y starting day with the mail...............
when we can see that they can and do come at different times of the day.
do they have to wait for the morning or first they gather at the owlery and then come down ............ bit weird for me to think????

hmmm... good question! we know that the owls delivering the daily prophet all come first thing in the morning. I know that they can come at all different times of day and night, but perhaps the school rules somehow restrict them to only deliver in the morning, unless it is something extremely urgent. I mean we know these aren't your garden variety owls, they know who they are looking for, and the urgency of their message, remember Harry telling Hedwig to keep at Ron, Hermionie, and Sirius untill they answered him? And Sirius complaining about Hedwig pecking his hands bloody untill he answered? I just assume that the school requires deliveries in the morning to keep owls from showing up in class rooms etc. but... I don't see why it couldn't have been at dinner.

I agree with Sirius Potter Fan, there probably is some sort of school rule saying owls should only arrive at breakfast. So that's why the sneak to the dorms at night, so they can give their message and no one will mind.

It makes sense for the owls to arrive during breakfast time so that lessons are not distrupted throughout the day by pupils opening all matter of parcels and letters etc. I had always thought that the owls all deliver at the same time and vary their flying speeds and path accordingly so that they are not all sitting in the owlery with their parcels and post. The owlery was mentioned in GoF and there was no mention of any letters etc being stored by the owls for breakfast time so I just thought they must do it a different way - of course, now you've got me thinking about it and they could keep it all at the Hogsmeade owl post shop. :)

Yeah, where do the owl and their parcels go? I am picturing owls circling the castle like planes at an airport.

I think it follows the tradition in the UK that your mail arrives in the Morning - and one would usually hope before midday!
I think JKR just see's it as another normal part of UK culture to have breakfast and read your mail - in fact it is usually stereotypically portrayed that way in many films etc.
I think the owls do get the mail - then go to owlry until it is maildrop time - unless it is urgent then it would go straight away me thinks!

Oh, well, that is an interesting bit of trivia then. I never knew mail came in the morning in the UK. Here in the US, it's sometime between 12pm and 3pm usually.

So, yeah, that does make sense that the kids would all get their mail at the same time as everyone else in the country. Plus, it makes for interesting conversation as they can all see what everyone else is getting and can comment on it and we as readers can see Harry seeing these things and it makes it easier from a narrative standpoint instead of having to work it in later in the story somewhere.

Or 5 or 6 if you had our old mail man. It was funny, my mom went postal on that the guy.

Back to HP.

It makes logical sense for mail to come in the morning, as Hogwarts is in the UK and that is what is done there. I also agree with Boing, there is no other good time to work it in later on.

i did know about the mails arriving in morning at certain places, but it does not happen in Pakistan. we get it same as US. :D
but havent we seen owls coming to classes directly, when Hedwig was hurt in OoTP, and at night in their dorm too when ron gets letter from Percy.

I think that I said below, that they are only allowd to deliver "urgent" messages at other times. When Hedwig was injured, I believe he would have disregarded any previous rules or instructions to get to Harry. As for Percy's letter, it's possible and probably that Percy considered it "urgent" and instructed his owl to deliver immediately, or at a time when he thought Ron might be alone...or...That was just the way JKR wanted it! :p

Hi everybody, this is my first post on Mature Potter :-)

I agree - also with what has been said about UK customs. I'd just like to add an additional thought.
If we exclude all the extra urgent and highly important mail, the majority of owls will probably bring the newspaper(s) and mail from friends and family. It makes sense for the newspaper to be delivered in the morning anyway. So, what about private letters? When does your average working wizard have time to write a letter? At night, after work, I should think. And if the owls were allowed to deliver these letters right away, many young wizard pupils would be disturbed in their sleep. So - the owls have to wait until breakfast time.
Does that make sense?

Actually, as memory serves me, Percy specifically says in his letter that he instructed the owl to deliver later so Ron would have a chance to read it in private.
