In GoF when Harry had the Marauder's Map, Barty Crouch was showing on it, breaking into Snape's office. We know that this was Barty Jr, but what I want to know is, would Moody have been showing up in his office, locked away in the trunk?

If not, Harry would have to have missed the fact that no where on the grounds was Moody showing.

If he did appear on the map, then he would always appear in the same place, never moving. Harry missed this also.

I am assuming that Moody/Crouch took the map from Harry to not only conceal the fact that he was not the real Moody, but to hide the fact that he had the real one locked up in a trunk.

I don't recall it ever mentioning that he saw "moody" listed. but...I could be wrong. However I think that since Moody was in the trunk, it actually had to be some sort of a "doorway" to like another dimension or something, and that could be why Moody wouldn't have shown up, because in "reality" he wasn't actually at Hogwarts? of course it could also be that Harry just never looked specificaly at Moodys office either, he may have never had reason to. It was on the second floor I think, by the DADA classroom, it wouldn't have been near Snape's office, so wouldn't have shown there. So unless he was using the map routinely in that area which I doubt he did, he would never have noticed that he was allways there even if it had shown up. Harry only looks at the portion of the map he is currently interested in, and the rest is folded. Something interesting to think about, if Moody would or wouldn't have been listed on the map. but since Barty jr. is no more...the world may never know... :p

I don't think that Moody showed up - because when Harry saw Barty Crouch in the office, surely he would have noticed if Moody showed up in the same area.

Also, I assumed that Crouch wanted the map because it is extremely useful. He could monitor anyone's whereabouts in the castle and even had access to secret passageways. I mean, it's not every day you get your hands on something like that . . .

What a good question! Never really thought about it! I guess that whenever Harry was looking at the Map, he wasn't ever specifically looking for Moody so perhaps wouldn't notice if he was or wasn't on it, or indeed if he moved about!

I didn't understand that entire scene, really.

Gryffindor tower is on the seventh floor, the prefects bathroom is on the fourth floor, Snape's office is in the Dungeon. I take it the Marauders map in the book works the same way they showed it in the movie were it folds out to reveal different floors .

If Harry was going from Gryffindor tower on the seventh floor to the prefects bathroom on the fourth floor, how did he end up in the dungeon? Moody's office is on the second floor so it could be that Harry didn't have that section of the map unfolded.

Harry had gone to investigate why Barty Crouch was breaking into Snape's office in the middle of the night. Funny thing is, Harry didn't notice that Moody wasn't anywhere on the section of the map, yet he turned up fairly soon. If he could see such a vast area (He saw where Filch had been, I am sure). Anyway, it really got me wondering about Moody/Crouch too.
I was totally and utterly disgusted when listening to that scene. I have read the book many times, but actually hearing it made it all sink in. The comments made by Moody/Crouch in regards to the Death Eaters, and the map. I was yelling at Harry in my head, No he's the bad guy!!

It is a real pity Harry couldn't put the clues together, if there were any from the map.
(I just realised that whenever Harry sees Dumbledore on it, he is pacing his study floor. Does that mean something?)
