Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
So far we have seen 4 movies. Two for Late Harris, and Two for Gambon. I say that they both have done a tremendous job. Then way DD's character is shaping up, I think Gambon is going to do excellent. I wonder how I would picture Late Harris battling voldemort in Ministry, and eventually all the horcrux business and at the end in that cave!!!!
I say Gambon was selected with a consideration for future.
I honor the thoughts of those who prefer Ian, but understand this folks. Using him as DD, would bring overshadows and comparings of Gandalf upto a level, where these films may start to suffer. One job can not be compared to other, no matter how close we may think it is. I would have voted for Ian if he hadnt done Gandalf already. But now, I dont know.....

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
You know . . . I think some of what it comes down to with me is that Gambon's DD just doesn't look old enough . . . DD is 150+ years old, Harris was believable , but Gambon just doesn't look like he could be any past 60 (yes, I am considering that wizards have longer life spans than "muggles") But I think they would still show their age unless like Lockheart, they are very vain and use spells to maintain their youthful appearance. Maybe if Gambon just looked more the part???

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
Fotescue, I think you meant Christopher Lee, not Llyod.
Lee was Count Dooku in Star wars, and Saruman in Lord of the Rings.
Llyod was the nutty proffeser in " Back to the future ".
LOL.
I also voted for Patrick stewart, I know that he is a hugely talented and humorous man, as I saw his Theater production " Scrooge " which was not only fantastic, and hilarious, and GENIUS, but Patrick played every role himself.
Could you imagine the talent required to perform a production of " Scrooge- a winters tale " Single-handedly?????
Being on stage, alone, to a packed audience, and the great thing was, because he has a real, " quirky, light-hearted " nature, he pulled it off.
Brilliantly, too.
If not Stewart, I would probaly vote for the man who played Hannibal Lecter in " Silence of the Lambs ".
His names at the tip of my tounge, but I just can't remember it!!.

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
Anthony Hopkins, is the name you are looking for.
Hmmmm... I dont know about him. He looks smart, and cunning, but as for witty and twinkle in the eyes, he probably wont fit.

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
I hadn't even thought of Sir Anthony . . . hmmmm possible, he does evil so well though, I think even if he were capable of a humerous twinkle in the eye, our prior preceptions of his characters might marr the performance for us. But, he is one awesome actor!

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
True,... but make up and costumes, hair, and the role may change that perception of Anthony Hopkins, I wonder how good his English accent is?...
Don't forget that the iconic image of Hopkins/Lecter in his cell, is an old image, probaly 10/15 years old.
I think he must be late 50s early 60s...

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
I still think Ian McKellan would have been a great choice even though a lot of people think its a Gandalf complex, but I didn't watch Lord of the rings and say oh my gosh it's Magneto! So perhaps Sean Connery coould have made a excellent Dumbledore.
The only thing that I am not keen on about Gamdon was said best by SPF
What good is being an "ass kicker" if you don't have the charm as well??? The whole thing with the "ass kicking" parts is that they are meant to be a surprise, a contrast, to the Dumbledore we see in everyday life at Hogwarts. You see Dumbledore as this kindly, funny, old wizard. Then when push comes to shove, he shocks you when he is powerfull and comanding, and takes care of business. The role requires someone who can expand to all aspects of the character, not just cover the "action scenes".

Re: Who should play Dumbledore?
Bravo Arwan! Not just for supporting my opinion but for wording it so well. I suppose it doesn't really matter anymore, since Gambon is tied in for the rest of the series . . . unless . . . well . . . anything could happen!

Well to answer the accent question, he's Welsh, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem and could even get away with playing with his natural accent as it's not too strong.
