Arrow Magic Late in Life

JKR has mentioned that someone who had not previously been able to do magic will find that ability late in life. So this probably means that either a Muggle or a Squib will suddenly stop being a Muggle or a Squib.

The way I see it, we have three obvious candidates: Petunia Dursley (my personal favourite), Arabella Figg, and Argus Filch. Which one of these do you think it'll be? Or will it be someone completely different?

Re: Magic Late in Life

Nice one Finnegan! Where did you hear this?

I agree with your personal favourite that it will be Petunia Dursley, and wonder whether Dumbledore's 'last', referring to the Howler she received in OotP, may have suggested to Petunia that the time was nearing that she would be able to use magic herself?

I think that Figgy has already resigned herself to never being able to do magic, and Filch has tried desperately to be able to do magic, and if he can't do it even working within the most magical place in England, I don't think is ever going to be able to do it!

Re: Magic Late in Life

I think it would have to be petunia since vernon is more anti wizard than she is and the irony would be appreciated
Petunia's knowledge of the wizarding world is unwelcome also which makes it unlike the other 2 candidates who have no problem being in it

OH! I say petunia - JKR did mention there is somethin more to Petunia that meets the eye. I say Petunia will be a witch or squib.

Re: Magic Late in Life

Well, you can rule out squib. I read a recent review where somebody asked Jo if Petunia was a squib and she answered in the negative.

Re: Magic Late in Life

Given JKR's recent comments on Petunia, you have to be liking the odd's it will be her ...
JKR's comments were almost mocking when you read them but then again you cant take that as a sure fire sign, encouraging none the less ...
Failing that I would love to say Dudley, just because of the sheer irony of all it would mean

Re: Magic Late in Life

I'm just taking a guess but I think that based a lot on the 5th book that Neville is the one that will be able to do magic later in life...i donno its just a feeling...i dont think that she means that they cant do magic at all but that they arent very good at it, maybe. She has also said that Neville will play an important roll in the remander of the books(see my post on spinners end) this is also pointing me in this direction. I also think that if its not Neville then it should be Petuina also because of the 5th book.

Re: Magic Late in Life

I get it--you mean better magic
Yes neville is better these days and one of my favorite scenes in Book 5 was the showdown between the death eaters and our gang
But I think she was hinting towards magic as in the first time--like a squib or a muggle performing it
Petunia is everyone's pick these days for muggle so I would have to agree with the latter

Re: Magic Late in Life

Yeah I cant wait to see what the DA is going to do now that they have been in one battle with the dark side, will it make them more scared or confident?!

Re: Magic Late in Life

I also thought of Neville. Perhaps the horror of what happened to his parents had scarred Neville so much he had blocked some of his powers. His meeting with Bellatrix Lestrange may be the turning point for him. He certainly improved immensely at the DA classes - was that after seeing the paper with news of the Azkaban escape? Maybe the sweet wrappers his mother keeps giving him are significant (charmed to prevent him from becoming a powerful wizard, which in turn would make him more of a target to the DEs?)
