Kids say the darnest things!

My five year old was at school (SK) on friday, and the teacher was talking about books and the difference between fiction and non-fiction. She told the children that Harry Potter was fictitious when he promptly put his hand up and said no he's not he's British!!

Re: Kids say the darnest things!

I'm routinely told by my daughter (7) that she can speak two languages -- English and British. Being from Ga, in America, I find that quite funny. She really does think that it's "another" language. She also says she learned it from Harry Potter.

Re: Kids say the darnest things!

I can assure you - the English and American's are separated by one common language - take it from an Englishman in US!
I have decided there is defo 2 distinct languages here - they sound the same, maybe spell somewhat the same but trust me, they are not the same!
It really surprises me how many people out here have no idea what I am saying - yet we are both speaking English!

Then you have people across the US with different accents and such also, so it really gets confusing. Whenever someone says we should make English the official language of the US, I always tell them that the British will be so excited if we can do that

Re: Kids say the darnest things!

Since I have been reading the books to my kids, we have discussed the differences in "American" and "English" languages. It's great! They have actualy decided that they like (and use) the British alternitives more.

As far as making "English" the official language in the US . . . I wish they would hurry . . . the part of the country I am in (Oklahoma) has more spanish speaking residents than english! Actualy I think that we need to decide on a global language . . . I wouldn't mind learning a new language, if I knew that at last I could comunicate with everyone I need to talk to!

Thanks Alz!

Had a pretty good 4th . . . but as you know if you have watched national news, things around here are on the soggy side. We tried to go to the lake for a cookout as we usualy do on the 4th, but when we got there, the entire park was under watter! Kids were upset. We came back into town and did our cookout closer to home, but it wasn't the same. The fireworks were great as always . . . The louder the better!
