Re: Who's Your Buddy? SNAPE

grrrrrrrr! So DD offers people jobs as he protects them. I never said that Filch wasn't being protected by DD, just that he IS NOT Snape's father!

Re: Who's Your Buddy? SNAPE

If he is being protected it must be for some reason significant to the story. Who else could he be associated with.

Re: Who's Your Buddy? SNAPE

But he lets Peeves stay on and he is a royal pain. We don't know why Filch is there. I tihnk he must do a great job keeping the place clean. Hagrid needed a job and DD offered him one, he even let him teach later on.

Yes you are right that a few needed protection like Trelawny and Firenze.

I guess we all have our own way of seeing things. No big deal. It's nice to get other people's insights

Re: Who's Your Buddy? SNAPE

A "muggle" spending hours cleaning would not do as well as a wizard!

There must be a reason!

Re: Who's Your Buddy? SNAPE

I also think he has a purpose. He has made it into both books and movies. His strange leaping down the aisle in GOF movie made many wonder why that was kept in the movie while other very important story lines were cut out - other than the obvious quasi comedic value. He may play some role in the end in terms of helping out. Harry said in ootp that filch has the most extensive knowledge of the castle and its secret passageways of anyone (sorry can't find the quote). I just don't think he is Snape's father.

Quite right why does/did Dumbledore allow Peeves to remain? I guess at one level it is very English to accept such eccentricity without too much question but perhaps that is JKR's way of hiding his real identity and purpose.

What we do know about peeves is that he really only took orders from Dumbledore and the Bloody Baron, and perhaps Lupin who used the Waddiwasi spell to shoot the gum up his nose. We know that Fleur says he would not be tolerated at Beauxbatons.

There are plenty of references to him that make him almost "invisible."

In the development of the story Peeves was cast before Hogwarts was thought of!

So he must be important!

Not necessarily. I'm not convinced that JKR thought of all the intricacies of her creation when she set out. Maybe Peeves was just something that she thought should occur in a magic castle ...
