Copies of the Marauders map?
My hubby, a fairly new HP sleuth, came up with a very good question last night and I thought I would put it up for some discussion.
Were there any copies of the Marauders map? We know that the marauders made the map, and I assume that since they were such good friends, that they went everywhere together so could have easily done their sneaking around with just the one map, but . . . might they have each had their own copy? Or . . . might Fred and George have found a way to duplicate it, and were thus so willing to part with it in only their 5th year?

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
There appear to be only three references to the origins of the Marauders Map and they all come from Lupin.

"The map," said Lupin. "The Marauder's Map. I was in my office examining it --"
"You know how to work it?" Harry said suspiciously.
"Of course I know how to work it," said Lupin, waving his hand impatiently. "I helped write it. I'm Moony -- that was my friends' nickname for me at school."
And that's how we came to write the Marauder's Map, and sign it with our nicknames. Sirius is Padfoot. Peter is Wormtail. James was Prongs."

The only clue that I can see is that it is referred to in the singular or as it. There is no suggestion that another exists.
Not really much help I am afraid.

Well there is one clue that I have just found, when Fred and George first give it to Harry an he reads is aloud as the words appear

The part in red seems to hint that they may have made more don't you think?

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
I think it could mean that they had made a number of items like the two way mirrors for instance.

That does bring up another point though...

Was this before or after Wormtail was discovered to be alive? Because if it was before he was, note how Lupin says "is" for everyone but James, who is obviously dead. I was under the impression that he solved the riddle after he reobtained the marauder's map and discovered that Pettigrew had been seen on it...but this would suggest he may have ben onto Wormtail even earlier on.

Soon we were leaving the Shrieking Shack and roaming the school grounds and the village by night. Sirius and James transformed into such large animals, they were able to keep a werewolf in check. I doubt whether any Hogwarts students ever found out more about the Hogwarts grounds and Hogsmeade than we did.... And that's how we came to write the Marauder's Map, and sign it with our nicknames. Lupin says about the map before Scabbers is forced to turn into Wormtail but after he has been spotted on the map and identified as Scabbers.

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
Oh, okay...I see. I was thinking that all three quotes happened in succession rather than at separate times within the book
Oh well, my conspiracy is dead I guess

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
I kind of like the idea that the four marauders made things to help in the disruption of class periods. It reminds me of Fred and George. Do you think Harry will find more things made by the marauders if he goes back to Godric's Hallow? Or maybe there is something in the room of requirement. The part in book six where Harry has to hide his copy of Advanced Potions, and he finds the room where everything is hidden including Malfoy's wardrobe.
Does that make sense? I kinda skipped around with my thoughts there...

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
I think it would be cool for Harry to run into some other things his Father and Sirius made . . . still can't help but think that the mirrors will come into play somwehere . . . just not certain how . . . No telling what helpful items he might find!

Re: Copies of the Marauders map?
I wonder what happened to Sirius' belongings when he went to Azkaban? We know that he got a place of his own but what happened to it once he was imprisoned? I have often thought that a good search of Grim Old Place may assist Harry in finding not only the locket but also books that Regulus may have had on Horcruxes or notes he may have had on destroying them. Since the two way mirrors were at Grim Old Place perhaps some more of Sirius' and James' old "Aids to Magical Mischief-Makers" might be there.
