Re: Head Boy

I think that Harry will go back too. Presumably a clue, or a trail of clues will lead him there, and then he will attend, whilst looking around for the horcrux.

If the ministry appoint the head, Fudge perhaps, or Percy, then will they want Harry Head Boy?

Maybe Dumbledore's brother will take the spot, and keep training Harry. Any of the Auror's we've met could easily fill the spot of DADA teacher.

Anyway, I still think Harry will be Head Boy. In OotP, on page 166-7, Harry goes into a chain of thought about his superiority to Ron which is precipitated by Ron receiving the Prefect badge. This may seem unbecoming, but really, everyone else seems to think it odd too. Moody, Hermione, Fred, George, Harry and Ron himself all seem to know that Harry SHOULD have gotten the position. Even Kingsley Shackelbolt is surprised (pg 172). Lupin sums up Dumbledore's behaviour the best: 'He'll have his reasons'.

Those reasons are:

'I feel I owe you another explanation, Harry,' said Dumbledore hesitantly. 'You may, perhaps, have wondered why I never chose you as a prefect? I must confess ... that I rather thought you had enough responsibility to be getting on with.' (OotP 844).

So really, Dumbledore WOULD have chosen Harry, as seemed natural to all, had not the destiny to slay or be slain by He Who Must Not Be Named taken precedence over worldly concerns.

When Harry is driven to thoughts of the battle against Voldemort by a boggart and the thought of his friends' deaths '...he felt older than he had ever felt in his life, and it seemed extraordinary to him that barely an hour ago he had been worried about a joke shop and who had gotten a prefects badge' (OotP 178).

Ron knows full well he is not the rightful prefect: 'It's a pain having to go down there, I'd rather - but we have to - I mean, I'm not enjoying it, I'm not Percy,' (OotP 184)

Hermione knows it's right, and does her duty without awkwardness, and Harry doesn't feel that it's weird at all. Destiny, and one's rightful place comes into these books quite often.

The Sorting Hat sings of splitting the students into houses (OotP 204). All four houses were meant to exist together, to function together. Thus, Slytherin's cunning and pure blood have a role to play. As do clever Ravenclaws, brave Gryffindors, and 'good' Hufflepuffs.

Perhaps Slytherins are there for those of pure blood, who, through their ambition, become rulers - a type of Royalty. With Gryffindors to be warriors. And Ravenclaws to be scholars and academics. And Hufflepuff the rest.

Like the caste system, one accepts their place, and their role, and the duty of others. It is the corrupt 'Lord' that has discredited the house of Slytherin, and made a concern for pure blood suspect - as Tolkein lamented of Hitler, he had made the proud Teutonic feelings forever suspect. (The blood of the Numereans plays a great role in LotR). Malfoy - blonde, pure-blooded - is an obvious symbl of a Hitlerian concern, and a none-too-subtle one. But there is a proper way to consider pure blood a virtue, just as there is pride to be had in the others, or else Slytherin would have always been suspect, and not included in the houses of Hogwarts.

But perhaps he became obsessed with pure blood after the rules were set in place - I think I recall something of that nature from Chamber of Secrets. And also, by page 206 of OotP, the Hat has fears that 'quartering' each year may be a worry, that it leads to divisions in what should be united. The Order of the Pheonix NEEDED its Slytherin - who else would agree to kill Dumbledore?

Hang on, this is about Head Boy, wasn't it? Okay, I don't think Ron will be Head Boy. It is not his destiny to rule. Like Fulke Greville, the best friend of Sir Phillip Sidney, Ron's epitaph will proudly read 'Friend of Harry Potter'.

Harry does have alot to be getting on with, but in the records of the school, it behoves Hogwarts to proudly state that whist he was here, The Boy Who Lived was Head Boy and Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, like his father before him. (That title 'Boy Who Lived' is just begging for him to die, isn't it?).

So, I reckon it'll be Harry. And that perhaps Draco will be Head Boy of Durmstrang.

Or it could be Ernie Macmillan. He seems the aristocratic type.

Re: Head Boy

Well, there's Hermionie, Lavender, Parvati and Padma Patil, Susan Bones, Hannah Abbot, Mandy Brocklehurst, Milicent Bulstrode, Pansey Parkinson, Sally-Ann Perks, and Lisa Turpin, are all mentioned in the first year sorting. That's only 11 . . . there should be more, but if they haven't been mentioned yet, or very much, they probably don't matter.

Pansey, Hannah, Padma, and Hermionie were the prefects, so are most likely. I like the idea, I'll start the poll! could be interesting!

Re: Head Boy

Well, here at the last turn, my conviction that it'll be Harry is starting to falter - and it's all because of Paintball and his 'idiot plot' theories.

I'd always read the books the way one reads mythology - and this is a personal version of a hero growing to fullfill the task that it is his destiny to perform. The books show the reality of Harry's thoughts and feeling, but give intimations of the myth that will be left behind him. I thought it only natural that this chosen one would be head Boy during his time at Hogwarts - just as he was the youngest seeker in a century, and eventually captain, and a victorious Tri-Wizard champion etc. They all go towards his legendary status.

But bloody Paintball and his theories are like a virus in my mind that wont stop - and now that the OotP film shows Harry [Spoiler Warning] given his nemisis' servant what he wants, while Neville stands firm, he does more and more look like a normal boy...

Which messes up my thoughts on the nature of Harry. I thought his throwing off of the Imperius curse, for example, showed he was a very powerful wizard...ugh.

Anyway, this is all to say, I admit to doubt that it will be Harry as Head Boy.

So, that raises the question of who I think will be then. Well, I hope it'll be Harry, and the books are 'mythic' and not 'mysteries', but should Paintball be right, then I think it could be Ernie Macmillan.

We don't see that much of him, as he isn't in Gryffindor, but when we do see him - in all of the books, I think - he shows leadership qualities. It is he that is organising the Hufflepuffs in CoS, when they are all discussing who the heir is. He is clearly their leader, and becomes their prefect. He was set down for Eton - a sure sign he is from the ruling class in England. And these books ARE traditional - traditional English things are shown to be good, whilst modern things - computer games, television, capitalism, plastic, hamburgers, even parliment - are shown to be suspect, trivial, shallow, corupt.

Ernie was not afraid to come forth and publically admit what he believed - about Harry and the Dark Lord's return in OotP, which shows a strength of character.

Okay. I guess that was all to say, my sentimental favourite is Harry, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's Ernie. Just thouhgt I'd get that down before Saturday. This Saturday. 6 days, my friends.
