Smile Whispers in the name

Im curious to know what is up with ppl not wanting to say voldemorts name and being scared to say it like as though he can
hears them or something and the way snape reacted when harry called voldemort by his name i just find it interesting,
any thoughts apart from them being scared because of who it is?

Re: Whispers in the name

I think that it all just goes back to the old superstition that if you speak of a bad thing happening, then it will. People used to believe that eveil spirits lived in wood. and if they talked of something fun or good that they planned on doing, they would "knock on wood" so the spirit wouldn't hear them speak of it and find a way to ruin it. Much the same as why we say "bless you" when someone sneezes, it was believed that the soul was temporarily pushed from the body with the force of a sneeze, so anyone near would "bless" them at that point so an evil spirit could not enter their body in place of their soul.

The spiders/acromantulas would not speak of the Basalisk, in the same way that wizards would not speak the name Voldemort. I believe that Voldemort most likely had his deatheaters encourage the idea that it was "bad luck" to say the name of Voldemort, by themselves refering to him as "the Dark Lord" I'm sure that many wizards and witches believed that saying the name would bring evil upon them, and in a magial world I would say that something like that would become even more believable. When you can kill or torture someone with a word and a wand, then why not believe that a name had power? But! Dumbledore did not believe it.

Dumbledore used the name Voldemort ( notice that he would not call Voldemort his "lord" he would only tell others that Voldemort called himself "lord") and Dumbledore encouraged others to say the name as well, even in the very first part of the first book with McGonagal.

So, I don't believe that saying the name Voldemort does anything at all, but as long as others think it does . . . (and yes, I do say "Bless you" when someone sneezes )

Re: Whispers in the name

Yeah that pretty much has it I think ...
I think people didn't want to say the name because they believed by saying his name it might bring him back or lead him to them.
It's almost like paying respect out of fear - if they utter that name it is akin to knowing him or being linked to him.
People that really know what Voldemort is about refer to him by his name, Voldemort even refers to him by his proper given name - why?
Because he holds no fear in their eyes, he is human the same as everyone else.
