Lupin on the Hogwarts Express

Something hit me a couple days ago when my daughter was watching PoA (for the millionth time) The trio meets Professor Lupin when he is asleep in the only remaining coach with room for them. Of course, conveniently he is there to repel the dementor that affects Harry so drasticaly, but . . . why is a professor on the train? Couldn't he aparate? (to Hogsmead) . . . the only other time we see a teacher on the train is Sluggy, but he obviously wanted the time to start his collection early. Did Dumbledore know that the dementors would have a "taste" for Harry? but if so how could he be certain that they would end up in Lupin's compartment? It just doesn't make sense. Aparating is free, and what we do know of Lupin is that he is very poor since he can't find employment, so why buy a train ticket?

Re: Lupin on the Hogwarts Express

Well, the logical reason would be that Lupin just came out of the full moon, and was still rusty enough to apparate. Given his financial shortcomings, he was given a free ride on Hogwarts train, which was going to Hogwarts anyways for the new term, where he was to show up as a professor.
And of course it provided DD an opportunity to keep the kids safe on train.

Then again, a lot of logic has been blown out of water by JKR, so she can throw a curve ball later with that situation.

Good reasoning SPF.

Re: Lupin on the Hogwarts Express

Lupin (who is one of my favorites) is a bit of a mystery to me in some ways. I always found it a bit odd he was on the train too. I agree that since he came to teach he was probably given a free ride to Hogwarts. Possibly he was asked to ride the train just to keep a watch on Harry. (Harry has been watched since he was a small child.) It was just luck that he happened to have Harry in his cabin. Made his job a bit easier.

What interests me is Lupin's relationship with Dumbledore. Dumbledore made special arrangements for him to attend Hogwarts and even made a place for him to transform when the moon was full. It was a lot to do for one student. Then he had him come back and teach later. At the end of HBP it was Lupin that was noted as having the worse reaction to Dumbledores death when it was announced in the hospital wing. He was crushed. I think he reacted more to this death then to the death of Sirius. Is there something we are missing?

Re: Lupin on the Hogwarts Express

I think that Lupin could perform magic even if he had just transformed back. This just buggs me . . . other than Sluggy, we haven't seen any other teachers on the train, and Sluggy had his reasons, and most likely wanted to be on the train. But Lupin . . . First I would think that if teachers regularly take the train, there would be a seperate "professor's" car. I mean . . . what teacher would choose hanging out with kids on a long train ride. (another thing . . . why is the ride so long? England isn't that big!) Dumbledore had to have been benind it, but how would Dumbledore have known that the Dementors would go after Harry?
