i was wandering that the maraunder map was made by moony, wormtail, padfoot, and prong so it end in the hands of filch because we all had read that fred and george steal it from filch office and then gave it to harry so how did filch find the map

Re: maraunder map

I would imagine they had it confiscated, or, like Snape, it insulted Filch when he came upon it, so he kept it. Assuming, that is, that Filch was at the school when the Marauders were. He could have taken over the office and the map already been there...

Re: maraunder map

Yeah, I had always just assumed it was confiscated by Filch either for offensiveness, one of them getting caught, etc.

Perhaps they left it behind for other students, Filch found it and it insulted him so he confiscated it.

I don't think we'll ever find out, though.

Re: maraunder map

I had assumed that the mauraders had passed it along to "deserving" troublemakers in the same way the Twins passed it to Harry. So somewhere along the line, it got found or confiscated. Most likely wormtail was using it and...

You know...Filch does really have a bad habit of leaving students alone in his office. Anyone else wonder about that?

Re: maraunder map

Well, Harry may not be a troublemakr on the twins level, but he does find his way into trouble. And I'm shure that, especially under the circumstances, that the twins felt him deserving. My point was mainly that the map had been handed down to someone that was deemed deserving. It would be interesting to find out just who lost the map to Filch.

Re: maraunder map

Was Filch the caretaker when the Marauders were at school? perhaps it was already there when Filch started. We know he wasn't working there when Molly was at school, but i worked that out to be about 25-30 years ago, because the oldest Weasley child has to be somewhere around 21....

I figure Filch confiscated it from the Marauders on one of their late night prowls. Lupin knew that Filch had the map so I'd assume the only way he knew that was because it was him Filch took it from. I don't think the Marauders passed it on to anyone else. Lupin said James would have been disappointed if his son hadn't found any of the secret passages out of the school. As for mischief making; Harry doesn't really use it so much for that, except when he went to Hogsmeade without permission when he first got the map from the twins.

It was a handy tool for the amount of freedom Dumbledore gave Harry - and Dumbledore knew Harry had the map thanks to Moody/Crouch, but hasn't confiscated it again so I'd assume he's okay with Harry's use of it.
