Time Turners
just thought id mention this quickly but hermione tells harry and ron on the train that she has tried all sorts of spells and they've all worked for her, how is she allowed to do magic outside the school without getting into trouble?

I think this question has been asked couple of times before here, but most logical explanation to this would be, muggleborns are not really under the watch from ministry of magic, are they? I mean it will know eventually that there is a kid in certain area who is capable of magic, and will send him/her the letter for magical education.
Another thing is, until they start the school, they are not really prohibited from performing magic outside of the school. When they start the first year, thats when they are told that, now that you have your magical education started, you are not allowed to do magic outside of school.

I think it likely that the M.o.M. monitors all young witches & wizards to make sure nothing gets out of hand, but allows for a certain amount of curiosity and experimentation. Hermione trying to levitate her bed, for example, might be considered innocent and harmless, but a young wizard turning neighborhood kids into teacups may not. Harry was able to do a lot of unintentional magic, after all, and we know that the Ministry did not descend on him when his hair grew back overnight or when Dudley fell into the snake exhibit at the zoo.

Who knows----it may even be unhealthy to supress magical abilities......I am suddenly reminded of Dumbledore's comment about the "damage" the Dursleys had inflicted on Dudley....but that's another thread.....

yes, another thread, but a good point. Supressing magic could cause many possible problems. Of course since this is all ficticious there are not absolutes, but just theorizing . . . It could build up till that person unintentionaly does something large and destructive in anger. It could also go to the opposite extreme, and cause that person who might have been a powerful and talented witch or wizard (like Hermionie) to eventualy loose those powers permanantly (use it or loose it!) Or . . . if held in . . . maybe they just . . . *POP*:D
